Looks aren’t everything, but a well-formatted, thoughtfully designed CV or resume can help draw prospective employers to your application and get to the highlights faster. The trouble is a lot of the free templates online are PDFs, and although you can edit them, they don’t have full editability until you invest in a proper PDF editor.
