The technology landscape is rapidly changing, and digital transformation is everywhere. But knowing what it means for your organisation, and what to do next, can be another matter entirely.
In response, the University of Salford and other partners on the Innovate UK Funded Centre for Digital Innovation developed KnowDigital, a digital skills learning platform. Their mission is to help individuals and businesses cut through the noise, turning complex frameworks, models, and theory into something clear, practical, and actionable.
They turned to BrightCarbon to develop a dynamic, engaging eLearning experience that guides learners step-by-step through digital transformation, building the confidence businesses need for technological takeoff.
The challenge
Digital transformation is complex, abstract, and often overwhelming. So we asked:
- How do you make broad, strategy-heavy content feel relevant to individual organisations?
- How do you move learners from awareness to confident decision-making?
- And how do you help learners connect multiple frameworks – maturity, skills, culture, leadership – into a single, coherent picture?
Strategy
Translate theory into a structured journey learners can follow to chart their course through the intergalactic planets of digital change.
We designed the learning to:
- Break digital transformation into five clear stages (Aspiration, Assessment, Leadership, Implementation, Review)
- Move from concept → model → application to mirror real strategic thinking
- Use visual storytelling through a space journey metaphor to connect abstract stages into a single narrative
- Reinforce learning through interaction, such as decision-making scenarios, assessments, and applied tasks
Outcome
The course turns digital transformation from a vague concept into a clear, navigable process.
Core ideas, like digital maturity, organisational readiness, and leadership alignment are broken into manageable steps, then brought to life through interactive scenarios and practical tools.
Visual storytelling plays a central role. A playful space journey metaphor connects each stage, helping learners build a mental model of transformation as a continuous process rather than a one-off initiative, supporting retention and long-term recall.
The result is a structured, engaging learning experience that helps learners assess their organisation, define priorities, and take action, equipping businesses with a digital roadmap for shooting for both the moon, and the stars.
